After years of searching, I finally managed to snag this piece.

IMG_5133 2.jpg

A Grand Seiko 4520-7000 from March of 1969.
It has my favourite movement by far, the 36000bph Hi-Beat 45 Series by Daini.
This case type was nicknamed the turtle shell and was one of the largest watches made by Seiko in that time period.
Most of these have dials that are damaged or have strong and uneven patina, so to find one in this shape took a lot of effort, but I am very glad to have finally got one.
It has a silvery white linen dial and a case with alternating brushed and polished finishing.

Thanks for reading!

Wow! I could see why you remained in search of this model. Stunning!
Addendum: Scrolled down after adding my comment and see that "Stunning" is the word of the day ;)

It definitely has a unique case design! Nothing else like it that I know of.

No wonder why this took so long and kudos to your patience. So clean and virtually flawless. This is the best of the three models, I'm not a gold person, and the dark blue dial doesn't really have texture. Again, congratulations and enjoy this in good health!

Thank you @BloominCookie!
Definitely agree with you on the other colours, the dark blue dial doesn't show off the texture well, although if a nice blue or gold example pops up at the right price I won't say no 😉.

@thetimecollective I know what a prolonged watch search feels like. Much respect. Your GS is gorgeous and I see you have mounted one of your see-through sapphire casebacks to its backside. Very nice!

I am on the fence when it comes to the see-through case back. I love the watch and its movement but how well made is the case? Does it protect the movement against sweat for instance?

It functions exactly the same as the factory caseback and is completely reversible.

I’d worry that I’d never want to swap it back again, but would suffer deep subconscious angst because of the wrongness of not doing so…

The gold medallion is prone to corrosion and wear as well, not much wrongness for preserving it in my books

There are tons of GS on the secondary market with corroded or missing medallions. That’s one of the first things I look for to be intact.

Same here. Unless it has a dial in perfect shape, I wouldn’t even consider one with a damaged medallion.
Many of them have been forcefully removed as well, possibly for whatever little gold they may hold, it’s sad to see.

The gold value is probably less than $20. It’s pathetic, really. It’s a travesty that people would deface a beautiful work of art for something of such trivial monetary value.
